The Cottagers' Horticultural Exhibition, July 1872
This was probably the second horticultural show held in Orwell, and the following contemporary report was reprinted in the June 1982 edition of the Orwell Bulletin
Competition a great success
Mr Sworder contributes the entire prize fund
With the view of improving the social condition of the cottagers, Mr H. Sworder, of the Manor Farm, originated last year this annual exhibition which has been attended with the most beneficial results – all praise to Mr Sworder who liberally contributes the entire prize fund. The competition this year took place on Tuesday last and was a very great success, the number of exhibitors being 40 against 22 last year and 95 exhibits against 51. Mr Chapman, the gardener, Barrington, officiated as judge. The prizes were distributed at 6 o'clock to the grateful recipients:
