A Yorkshire man by birth

We regret to record the death of Mr Joseph Marr on Saturday last at his residence at Malton farm. Mr Marr was well known throughout the district and in agricultural circles his genial presence will be much missed. A Yorkshire man by birth, 57 years of age, he came and settled at Malton Farm about 12 years ago and since that time has interested himself in nearly every institution connected with the agricultural industry and was respected and popular in the district where he farmed 640 acres. He was a successful breeder of Shire horses and Shorthorns, taking numerous prizes at Gransden and Royston.

He was interested in the welfare of the community around him and for the past 11 years has done valuable work as a member of the Caxton Board of Guardians and the Rural District Council, and as Chairman of the Orwell Parish Council. He was also a manager of the Orwell Schools. He was an interested and one of the hard working promoters of the work connected with the building of the new Chapel at Orwell, completed about 5 years ago (approx. 1907), being treasurer of the building committee and a regular worshipper.
