A E Pearce (Bert)

Obituary taken from the Orwell Bulletin December 1982.

Mr A E (Bert) Pearce aged 79 years.

He was pleased and proud to receive his long service medal from the Queen Mother

He spent all his working life of nearly 60 years on Manor Farm, much of that time in charge of the horses. He was pleased and proud to receive his long service medal from the Queen Mother at one of the last Royal shows to be held in Trumpington. He was always ready to teach any youngsters and there are vivid memories of coming home at the end of a long day, singing harvest songs with Bert, which had been taught by him.

He drove the decorated wagon in the Silver Jubilee procession in 1935 and during the war was a loyal Air Raid Warden, giving hours of time each week on duty.

Bert was a member of the Parish Church, he was also a craftsman and for a long time was the only person who kept alive the art of corn dolly making.
