Thanks and gratitude from Orwell Methodist Church for over 50 years' dedication as the church organist.

David Miller, of Town Green Road, is very modest about his qualification to be a Member of the Order of the British Empire. He was nominated for his services to the community of Orwell, and in particular for his many years as organist at our Methodist Church. He says that he has been helped in his work by many others over the years and he would like the village to feel that this is an award for the community too. Those who know David well will be aware however of his early struggle with deafness and asthma, which makes his musical achievements all the more creditable.

David went to Buckingham Palace on Friday 23rd November to receive his award from Prince Charles and, together with Audrey, their daughter Frances and grandaughter Samantha, had a wonderful day. David said that his overwhelming impression was of the kindness and consideration of everyone concerned, from the policeman who helped him with parking to the officials who briefed him on etiquette when meeting HRH. David waited his turn with the other 115 candidates in the palace gallery, admiring all the wonderful paintings, while the rest of the family watched the presentations in the ballroom to the music of the orchestra of the Life Guards. David was the one hundred and tenth person to be presented, but it was worth the wait to receive the Prince's congratulations, the citation signed by the Queen and the silver-coloured cross of the M.B.E. with its scarlet ribbon and its inscription "For God & the Empire".
