Sunday 2nd January 2000

The 5-a-side tournament was held on two specially marked pitches at the recreation gound, with the first kick off at 12.00am.

twelve teams competed

As a result of gentle pursuasion over the previous few weeks by Katie Reid, twelve teams competed, including the WI, the Petersfield Pests, the Chequers, Orwell Air Force, the Vectors, the Georgeous Girls, the Ex-Pats, the Beer Bellies and Orwell FC. The initial round robin games were based upon four leagues, followed by semi-finals and the Final.

The Chequers and Orwell FC met in the Final

The Chequers and Orwell FC met in the Final, with Orwell FC winning narrowly by 1-0. Orwell FC were captained by Justin Neil, and winners' medals were presented by Roy Primett and received with the acclamation of the spectators and players.

The spectators and players were treated to free bacon rolls, cakes and tea. Special thanks were due to Colin Marriott for sponsoring the event, including providing the barbecue.

As the March 2000 Orwell Bulletin recorded "Congratulations to everyone for contributing to such a memorable day. All teams showed good sporting spirit especially when there was a marked contrast in age and experience". Roger Golden wrote "It brought all age groups and people of different interests together. A true village event."
