New Year's Eve, 1999
The eve of the new Millennium
The Millennium Reminder.....
A card was circulated to all households setting down Orwell's schedule for the Millennium celebrations. Events commenced with a gathering in the
Methodist Church at 6.00pm, followed at 9.00pm by the Millennium Bug Bash in the
Village Hall.
At 11.50pm the crowds, many carrying lighted candles, moved to the Clunch pit for the "Millennium Moment", and the lighting (at 12.00pm precisely!) of the Beacon on Toot Hill, whilst the St Andrew's bells were rung and fireworks were lit.
After welcoming the 21st century then, with great relief that there seemed to have been no major impact from year 2000 computer issues, it was back to the Bug Bash in the Village Hall, where Breakfasts were available through till 3.00am.
Just a handful of the crowds that gathered just before midnight in the High Street and Towb Green Road with their candles
Midnight - and the Beacon blazes
